App Store app icon checker

Pick a 1024 by 1024 image. The checker compares it with Apple’s requirements, shows how the icon looks on an iPhone and builds an AppIcon folder for Xcode.

In short

The App Store needs one square 1024 by 1024 pixel image with no transparency and no rounded corners of your own. The iPhone rounds the corners itself, and Xcode makes every other iPhone and iPad size from that one image (Apple, Oct 18, 2026).

The file stays on your computer. The check and the download are made in this browser.

Step 1

Icon file

A 1024 by 1024 PNG. Drop the file here or choose it.

An example is being checked right now, the icon of a made-up app called Tide. It has a small caption near the edge on purpose. Pick your own file to check it.

Step 2

What we found

First what App Store Connect won’t accept, then what will spoil the look, then things worth a second look.

Size, format, transparency and color profile are read from the file itself. Rounded corners, margins, edges, fine detail and brightness are estimated from the pixels, so treat them as hints.

Step 3

On the Home Screen

Light and dark wallpaper and the tinted look. The neighboring icons are drawn as an example.

The iPhone makes the dark and tinted looks itself unless you draw your own. Apple doesn’t describe how, so the tinted icon here is an approximation. Icon Composer and the simulator show the exact look.

Step 4

In the App Store, in search and in Settings

The icon at real size. If the artwork doesn’t read at 40 and 29 points, simplify it.

Sizes in points are approximate. The exact size depends on the iPhone model and display settings.

Step 5

Download

An AppIcon.appiconset folder with Contents.json for Xcode and a 1024 PNG without an alpha channel. Put the folder into Assets.xcassets in place of the old AppIcon.appiconset.

One 1024 image is enough for iPhone and iPad. Xcode makes 180, 120, 87 and the other sizes from it and doesn’t need separate files. For the Mac, Xcode asks for every size, and this set is for iPhone and iPad.

Size1024 × 1024 pxA square. The system makes the small sizes for the Home Screen, Settings and notifications.
Shapesquare, no roundingThe system masks the corners. Pre-rounded corners spoil the highlights and leave a jagged edge.
TransparencynoneApple asks for an opaque, full-bleed background. App Store Connect rejects a build with a transparent icon.
ColorsRGB, Display P3, Gray Gamma 2.2Convert other profiles, such as Adobe RGB or CMYK, to sRGB or Display P3.
FormatPNGFor raster artwork Apple recommends PNG because it is lossless.
Sizes for Xcodeone 1024 imageFor iPhone and iPad Xcode makes the other sizes itself. The Mac needs every size.
Appearancesdefault, dark, clear, tintedThe system makes any variant you don’t provide. You can add your own in Xcode or Icon Composer.
Textonly when essentialSmall text is hard to read, and the app name already appears next to the icon.

Questions

What size does an App Store app icon need to be?

One 1024 by 1024 pixel square. Xcode makes every iPhone and iPad size from it, and the App Store shows it on your product page (Apple, Oct 18, 2026).

Do I still need 180, 120, 87 and the other sizes?

Not for iPhone and iPad. In Xcode an app icon uses a single size by default and Xcode makes the rest. You only need separate images if you want to draw a small size differently. For the Mac, Xcode asks for every size.

Why does App Store Connect reject my icon?

Most often because of transparency. The App Store icon must be opaque and have no alpha channel, otherwise the build upload fails with ITMS-90717. The PNG this checker builds is saved without an alpha channel.

Should I round the corners myself?

No. The iPhone rounds the corners itself to match its own shape. Pre-rounded corners leave background in the corners and a jagged edge.

How do I make dark and tinted icons?

You don’t have to, the iPhone makes them itself. You can add your own in Xcode in the same app icon (Any, Dark, Tinted) or in Icon Composer. Apple asks for the tinted icon in grayscale and the dark one with a transparent background.

Do I need Icon Composer for iOS 26?

No. Apple accepts a flat image too. Icon Composer lets you control the layers and the glass highlights yourself.

Where does my file go?

Nowhere. The file is opened and checked in this browser and isn’t sent to the site.

Appto

In Appto the agent draws the icon together with the app’s palette and fonts and shows the options side by side. On the App Store page the icon options sit next to the screenshots and texts.
