The niche leader, Ultimate Guitar, makes about $1.3M a month, a range of $665K to $2.7M (our estimate, not Apple data, September 13 to October 13, 2026). The leaders charge $30 to $70 a year for Pro, Solo sells for $17.99 one-time, and two of the four leaders have under 1,000 ratings (App Store, September 9, 2026). The open spot is a timed drill with a score by fretboard zone that works offline and without an account.
How much money is in the niche
People pay here, and they pay for the app itself. The leader, Ultimate Guitar, makes about $1.3M a month on the App Store, a range of $665K to $2.7M. That is our estimate from ratings growth between September 13 and October 13, 2026, not Apple data. The niche scores 12 out of 13, and Appto's research came across it on September 9 and 10, 2026. On the book's shelf it gets 80 out of 100 for money, 85 for weak leaders, 80 for room to be different and 90 for ease of building.
The big player is Ultimate Guitar. On September 9 and 10, 2026 it ranked 7th on the US top grossing chart for Music. On the same chart on September 10 you could find GuitarTuna (11th), Smule (14th) and Simply Sing (15th), while Simply Piano held 7th in Education. Several players share the money, nobody owns the market alone.
The money comes from subscriptions and one-time purchases. A Pro subscription from the leaders costs $30 to $70 a year. Nobody in the niche makes money from ads (Appto research, September 10, 2026).
How we estimate revenue
Appto estimates revenue from the growth in App Store ratings. It is our estimate, not Apple data. In half of the cases the estimate is within 2x of the real figure, in four out of five within 3x, and for large apps it tends to run low. Ads, web sales and Google Play are not included.
One giant and a row of small trainers
One big player sits at the top, and below it are trainers with hundreds or a few thousand ratings.
| App | Rating | Ratings | Price |
|---|---|---|---|
| Solo - Fretboard Visualization | 4.8 | 640 | $17.99 one-time |
| Ultimate Guitar: Chords & Tabs | 4.7 | 475,712 | Free |
| Fretonomy - Learn Fretboard | 4.7 | 2,460 | Free |
| Fret Pro Guitar Notes Trainer | 4.8 | 806 | Free |
Appto data. Rating, rating count and price from the US App Store on September 9, 2026, Appto book, edition of October 13, 2026.
Ultimate Guitar lives on song chords and tabs, and the fretboard is a side topic for it. The apps that train the fretboard directly are small. In App Store search for "guitar fretboard" on September 9, 2026, half of the top ten had fewer than 100 ratings, and three of them had 48, 6 and 1.
Yet Solo, with 640 ratings, sells for $17.99 upfront. People are willing to pay in advance for a good fretboard trainer, at more than three times the $4.99 Appto usually charges for its own apps.
How to stand out
Build what the leaders don't have. Speed drills and a score that shows progress.
- A timed drill. "Where is C# on the fifth string?" with a timer.
- A score by fretboard zone. You see which frets and strings the player is shaky on.
- Any tuning. Fully offline, no account.
A chatbot is not the competition here. ChatGPT will name the notes of a scale, but it won't give you a speed drill or track your progress (Appto check, September 10, 2026).
A five-screen version 1
Version 1 does one job. It teaches you to find notes on the neck fast.
- Fretboard with notes. Any note, scale or chord in any tuning and any position.
- Scale and chord picker.
- Timed drill.
- Progress by fretboard zone.
- Settings and tunings.
No songs, tabs or social features in version 1. You need no content assets at all. The fretboard is drawn with shapes in code, the notes are 12-tone equal temperament arithmetic, and the sound is synthesized. No server and no account either.
The book suggests a first App Store screenshot with a fretboard, one highlighted note and the question "where is C# on the fifth string?". Treat it as an idea and test it with your audience.
How to charge
One purchase or a yearly Pro plan. The leaders charge $30 to $70 a year for Pro, and Solo sells for $17.99 one-time (App Store, September 9, 2026).
There are no ads in the niche, and adding them isn't worth it. A trainer without a server has no running costs, so with a one-time purchase the buyer knows what they pay for and you don't pay for a server every month.
The main risk
The data speaks well of the niche, but the product has to be made by someone who plays. Otherwise it comes out correct and bland. The agent will get the notes right on its own. Which drills actually help, which fretboard is easy on the eye and how a player should progress week to week is for a guitarist to decide.
The second risk is the name. The top of App Store search for "guitar" belongs to Ultimate Guitar with 475,712 ratings, so Appto's research suggested aiming at "fretboard" and "guitar scales" (September 9, 2026). The book hasn't checked a name for this niche yet, so check yours before you write code.
Build your own
Niche 01 in full, with a ready task for your agent, is in the free sample of the book 50 iPhone app niches. Five niches for your email.
The task fits in seven lines. What to build and with what, who it is for, how it differs from Solo, Ultimate Guitar and Fretonomy, the five screens, what version 1 leaves out, how the app makes money and what to check before you start. You paste it into Claude Code, Codex or Appto, and the agent starts with a five-screen version 1.
The road from the task to the App Store is covered in how to build an iOS app with AI. Re-check the niche in Appto before you start, because markets move. If you don't play guitar yourself, bring in someone who does.
Questions
Do I need sheet music, recordings or a song library?
No. The fretboard is drawn in code, the notes are calculated and the sound is synthesized. Version 1 needs no content assets.
Do I need a server or user accounts?
No. The trainer works fully offline and without an account.
Should I add ads?
Nobody in the niche makes money from ads, the leaders live on subscriptions and one-time purchases. Adding ads isn't worth it.
Who should build this app?
Someone who plays, or someone who builds it together with a guitarist. Without that the trainer comes out correct and bland.
Build your own app in Appto
Appto checks the niche on fresh App Store data, designs the screens, writes the code, builds the App Store page and submits to Apple from your account or shows you what to press in App Store Connect. Runs on your own Claude Code or Codex.
