You can't install Xcode on Windows. It only ships for macOS, and the macOS license allows virtual machines only on Apple computers. Without your own Mac, you build on someone else's. That can be a cloud Mac from €75 a month with a 24-hour minimum lease, a cloud build through Expo or Codemagic, or a service that builds on its own Macs (prices as of October 16, 2026).
Can you install Xcode on Windows
No. Xcode only ships for macOS, and Xcode 27 needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 and an Apple silicon Mac (Apple, October 16, 2026). There is no Windows download and no online version.
Running macOS in a virtual machine on a regular PC isn't a way out either. The macOS Tahoe license allows up to two extra copies in virtual machines only on an Apple computer that already runs macOS (section 2B(iii), macOS Tahoe license). The same document requires a Mac to be leased for at least 24 consecutive hours, which is why you can't rent a cloud Mac for less than a day, even at an hourly rate.
Swift for Windows exists, but it builds Windows programs. SwiftUI and UIKit live only in Apple's SDK, which ships with Xcode. And since April 28, 2026 the App Store only accepts builds from Xcode 26 or later.
Five ways to build without your own Mac
Without your own Mac, an iOS app is built on someone else's. The difference is whose Mac it is and how much freedom you get.
| Option | How it works | Price as of Oct 16, 2026 |
|---|---|---|
| Cloud Mac | a remote desktop running regular Xcode | Scaleway Mac mini M1 at €75 a month or €0.11 an hour, AWS EC2 Mac from $0.65 an hour, 24-hour minimum everywhere |
| Cloud builds for your own code | you write code on Windows, the service's cloud Mac builds it | Codemagic, 500 free minutes a month on a Mac mini M2; GitHub Actions from $0.062 a minute on macOS |
| Expo for React Native | EAS Build builds the iOS version on a cloud Mac, EAS Submit sends it to the App Store | Free with 15 iOS builds, Starter $19 a month |
| xtool on Linux or Windows via WSL | builds an iOS app with SwiftPM and installs it on your iPhone | free, needs the Xcode file from Apple's site and an Apple ID |
| Browser builder | an agent writes the app and the service builds it on its own Macs | for example Superapp Pro at $25 a month |
Prices and terms from Scaleway, AWS, Codemagic, GitHub, Expo, xtool and Superapp, checked October 16, 2026. You need a $99-a-year Apple Developer account in every case to ship on the App Store.
Xcode Cloud, Apple's own build service, also runs on Apple's Macs, and 25 compute hours a month come with Apple Developer Program membership (Apple). But you can only set up Xcode Cloud the first time from Xcode, which means on a Mac (Apple docs).
What it costs with and without a Mac
Your own Mac costs less than renting one around the clock within the first year. The cheapest Mac mini on the US Apple Store is $899 (apple.com, October 16, 2026). An AWS cloud Mac on M1 running nonstop is $0.65 an hour, which comes to $5,694 a year.
Renting pays off when you need a Mac now and then. A day on AWS is $15.60, so one day a week adds up to $811 a year. Scaleway rents a Mac mini M1 for €75 a month. Cloud builds are cheaper still, but you lose comfortable work with SwiftUI and the simulator.
Visual Studio, Flutter and React Native
Cross-platform tools don't remove the Mac. They only move the build onto one.
- Visual Studio and .NET MAUI. Microsoft says plainly that for iOS, Visual Studio must connect to a Mac on the network, because Apple's build tools only run on a Mac (Microsoft Learn). Xamarin support ended on May 1, 2024 (Microsoft).
- Flutter. Flutter's iOS setup goes through Xcode and steps on a Mac. Codemagic can build it for you, with Xcode versions from 16.0 to 27.2.
- React Native and Expo. Expo says you used to need macOS for iOS, and now you can build in the cloud with EAS Build and submit to the App Store with EAS Submit (Expo). Every build gets a fresh macOS virtual machine with Xcode.
What you can't do without a Mac
Without a Mac at hand you lose the fast edit loop. The iPhone simulator runs only on macOS, SwiftUI Previews only show in Xcode, and Instruments for finding slowdowns is part of Xcode too.
You can still test on a phone without a Mac. A cloud build goes to TestFlight and you install it on your iPhone. The App Store rules ask you to test the app on a device before submitting, and TestFlight works for that.
If you write SwiftUI, a cloud Mac with regular Xcode is the most comfortable option. For React Native or Flutter, cloud builds are enough. If an AI agent writes the code, you can drive it from any computer and build wherever Xcode is. How that works with Claude Code is in How to build an iOS app with Claude Code.
Which one to pick
- You want to learn SwiftUI and ship apps regularly. Get your own Mac. It pays for itself against nonstop renting in the first year.
- You need to build and submit once. A cloud Mac for a day or a month.
- You write React Native or Flutter. Expo or Codemagic, no Mac at all.
- You want to describe the app in words and install nothing. A browser builder that builds on its own Macs. The approaches are compared in How to build an iOS app with AI.
Appto runs only on a Mac. The app itself opens on macOS 12, and building apps needs Xcode 26 on macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. In return, the whole path from niche to App Store happens on your Mac, with your code and your Apple keys. The full cost of that setup is in What it costs to build an iPhone app.
Questions
Can I install Xcode on Windows?
No. Xcode only ships for macOS, with no Windows or online version. Xcode 27 needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 and an Apple silicon Mac (Apple, October 16, 2026).
Can I build an iOS app on Windows?
You can write the code, but the build has to happen on a Mac. That can be a cloud Mac, a cloud build through Expo or Codemagic, xtool via WSL, or a service that builds on its own Macs.
Can I run macOS in a virtual machine on a PC?
Not under the macOS license. It allows virtual copies only on an Apple computer that already runs macOS (macOS Tahoe license, section 2B(iii)).
How much does a cloud Mac cost?
Scaleway rents a Mac mini M1 for €75 a month, and AWS charges from $0.65 an hour. The minimum lease is 24 hours everywhere, as the macOS license requires (October 16, 2026).
Do I need an Apple Developer account?
To publish on the App Store, yes, at $99 a year. Expo says plainly that you can't build for the App Store without Apple Developer Program membership.
Build your own app in Appto
Appto checks the niche on fresh App Store data, designs the screens, writes the code, builds the App Store page and submits to Apple from your account or shows you what to press in App Store Connect. Runs on your own Claude Code or Codex.
