What Xcode is and which version is current in 2026

Apple's app for writing, building and uploading iPhone apps. Versions, Mac requirements, download size and AI models as of October 16, 2026.

In short

Xcode is Apple's free Mac app for writing, testing and uploading apps for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, Apple TV and Vision Pro to the App Store. As of October 16, 2026, the current release is Xcode 27.1 from October 15, 2026, and it needs macOS Tahoe 26.6 and a Mac with an M1 chip or later.

What Xcode is

Xcode is Apple's development environment. In one window you write Swift, build screens in SwiftUI, run the app on a simulator or your own iPhone, hunt bugs and measure speed in Instruments. The same app archives your build for the App Store and uploads it to App Store Connect from the Organizer window.

Xcode costs nothing. The Mac App Store lists it as Free, sold by Apple Inc., and version 27.1 is 3.1 GB (Xcode in the Mac App Store, October 16, 2026). What you pay Apple for is the Apple Developer Program, 99 USD a year, which you need to put an app on the App Store. Running your own app on your own iPhone works with a free Apple Account too.

Where to download Xcode and where things are

The regular release installs from the Mac App Store. Pre-release builds, currently Xcode 27.2, sit in Apple's downloads area, linked from the Xcode page. After installing, open Xcode › Settings › Components. That is where platform support and simulator runtimes come from, and they are not part of the 3.1 GB store download.

You start a project with File › New › Project and set signing and the bundle ID on the app target's Signing & Capabilities tab. A release build comes from Product › Archive, which opens the Organizer with the upload button. Your developer account goes in Xcode › Settings › Apple Accounts.

The App Store doesn't demand a new Xcode on launch day. The Xcode 15 requirement took effect on April 29, 2024, and the Xcode 26 requirement on April 28, 2026. As of October 16, 2026, Apple has set no date for Xcode 27, and App Store Connect still accepts builds from Xcode 26.

AI in Xcode 26 and 27

Since Xcode 26 there is a coding assistant built in. It answers questions about your project, writes tests and documentation, and explains and fixes errors. Per the Xcode 26 release notes you can sign in with a ChatGPT or Claude account, add another provider with your own key, or run a local model on an Apple silicon Mac.

On February 3, 2026, Apple shipped the Xcode 26.3 release candidate with coding agents, Anthropic's Claude Agent and OpenAI's Codex (Apple Newsroom). Xcode 27 added Google's models. Building an app with an agent is covered on the vibe coding page.

How to install Xcode, step by step

  1. Open the Apple menu › About This Mac and note the chip and the macOS version. Xcode 27 needs an M1 chip or later and macOS Tahoe 26.6 or later.
  2. If your system is older, update it in System Settings › General › Software Update. An Intel Mac can't run Xcode 27 and stays on the Xcode 26 line.
  3. Find Xcode in the Mac App Store and click Get. Leave plenty of free disk space, since simulator runtimes arrive later as separate downloads.
  4. On first launch, tick the platforms you need, such as iOS. Xcode downloads their support and a current simulator runtime.
  5. Sign in with your Apple Account under Xcode › Settings › Apple Accounts. Without a membership Xcode creates a personal team for running apps on your own iPhone.
  6. Create a project with File › New › Project › App and press Run to launch it on a simulator.

Common mistakes

  • Xcode 27 on an Intel Mac. The Xcode 27 release notes say it only installs and runs on Apple silicon Macs. Intel Macs keep Xcode 26, whose builds the App Store still accepts as of October 16, 2026.
  • Uploading from an old Xcode. Since April 28, 2026, App Store Connect only takes builds from Xcode 26 or later using a version 26 SDK. An archive from Xcode 16 won't be accepted, however many times you upload it.
  • iOS 13 in an old project. Since September 9, 2026, the App Store accepts apps that target iOS 13 or later, but Xcode 26 and 27 build projects starting at iOS 15. Older projects need their minimum version raised.
  • Looking for Xcode for Windows or iPad. Apple ships Xcode for the Mac only, and the Mac App Store listing requires macOS 26.6 and an M1 chip or later. Without a Mac there is no way to build an App Store app in Xcode.

Appto works next to your Xcode. The agent, Claude Code or Codex on your own subscription, writes the app as a regular project, builds it and checks the screens, and the project stays yours and opens in Xcode like any other. More on the code page.
