AI for iOS coding. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor on the same task

The three tools people most often pick for iPhone apps. What each one does between a brief and a screen in the simulator, and what it costs.

In short

Claude Code, Codex and Cursor all work for an iOS app. All three write Swift and SwiftUI, but building and running the app still happens in Xcode on a Mac. Claude Code and Codex are agents in the terminal and inside Xcode since 26.3, while Cursor is a code editor with an agent built in. Plans start at $20 a month (October 17, 2026).

The three tools in one table

Claude Code, Codex and Cursor solve the same problem in different ways. The first two are agents that drive the work themselves, and the third is a code editor with an agent inside.

One task, three tools

Take one task. Build a SwiftUI screen from a description, compile the app, open it in the iPhone simulator and look at a screenshot. We didn't measure speed or code quality. The comparison below is based on each tool's documentation and on our work with Claude Code, which built all 9 Appto apps on the App Store (October 13, 2026).

  • Write the screen. All three write SwiftUI from a plain description.
  • Build. Claude Code and Codex call xcodebuild in the terminal themselves. Cursor builds through the Sweetpad plugin, which Cursor's official Swift guide recommends.
  • Open in the simulator. Agents in the terminal launch the simulator with xcrun simctl. The Claude app for Mac has a dedicated simulator panel where Claude taps the screen itself (preview).
  • See the SwiftUI Preview. Only Xcode renders previews. All three get a snapshot through Xcode's tools if the project is open in Xcode 26.3 or later.
  • Work without a Mac. None of them builds an iOS app in its own cloud. The cloud machines of Claude Code, Codex and Cursor run Linux with no Xcode.

Claude Code

Claude Code is built to drive a project on its own. It follows a CLAUDE.md rules file and supports skills, hooks, a plan before edits and several tasks in parallel. The official swift-lsp plugin shows it compile errors right after each edit.

For iOS, Claude Code has something the others don't. A simulator panel in the Claude app with up to four devices, taps and screenshots (docs, October 16, 2026). Inside Xcode it works as the Claude Agent, on the same engine.

The downside is cost at volume. Max gives 5 or 20 times the usage of Pro and costs $100 or $200 a month. How to take Claude Code through a whole project is in How to build an iOS app with Claude Code.

Codex

OpenAI's Codex works the same way, as an agent in the terminal, and comes with a ChatGPT subscription. Since July 9, 2026 it has been part of the ChatGPT app for Mac and Windows (OpenAI). Its open-source code is on GitHub with 129,537 stars (GitHub, October 17, 2026).

Codex is on every ChatGPT plan, from Free and Go at $8 up to Pro at $100, $200 or $500 a month (OpenAI). On Plus, limits are counted in five-hour windows, and Pro has no five-hour limit. Inside Xcode Codex works as an agent since 26.3, and from the terminal it connects to Xcode's tools with the same command as Claude Code.

From the ChatGPT app on iPhone you can start Codex cloud tasks and drive a task on a connected Mac. You can't build an iOS app in the Codex cloud, since it runs Linux too.

Cursor

Cursor is a code editor where the agent works next to your files. It suits you if you want to see and edit the code yourself. For iOS, Cursor itself says Xcode on a Mac is required and recommends the Swift and Sweetpad plugins and xcode-build-server (Cursor's guide). Since Xcode 26.3, Cursor can connect 20 Xcode tools, including build, tests and SwiftUI Preview snapshots, on a paid plan (docs).

In 2026 Cursor changed owner and pricing. SpaceX acquired it on August 14, 2026 (Cursor blog). Since October 12, new customers buy The X Subscription. Plus at $8 gives Grok models only, Premium at $30 opens Claude and GPT at provider prices on top of the subscription, and there are Super at $100 and Ultra at $200. Older plans such as Pro at $20 stay with existing subscribers (Cursor).

Which one fits your work

  • You want the agent to run the project while you check screens. Claude Code or Codex.
  • You want to read and edit the code yourself with an agent's help. Cursor or the assistant inside Xcode, covered in Xcode 26 AI.
  • You already pay for ChatGPT. Codex comes with it, so start there.
  • You're not sure. Give the same one-screen task to two tools and compare whether it built the first time, how many fixes it took and whether the screenshot matched the description.

Appto works with Claude Code and Codex on your own subscription, and each app can have its own agent. The full path from niche to the App Store has been tested with Claude Code. Appto adds a niche check on App Store data, screen mockups, a check of every screen in the simulator, the App Store page in every language and App Store Connect, asking for your OK before each change.

Questions

Which AI writes code for iOS apps?

For iPhone apps people most often use Claude Code, Codex and Cursor. All three write Swift and SwiftUI, and Xcode on a Mac builds the app.

Cursor or Claude Code for iOS?

Claude Code drives the project and checks screens in the simulator itself, while Cursor suits you better if you read and edit the code yourself. Both need Xcode on a Mac for iOS.

Claude Code or Codex?

Their iOS capabilities are similar, and both work in the terminal and inside Xcode 26.3. If you already pay for ChatGPT, Codex comes with it. Appto works with both, and its full path is tested with Claude Code.

Is there a free AI for coding?

Codex is on the free ChatGPT plan with limits, Cursor has a Free plan, and ChatGPT in Xcode works without an account. Claude Code has no free plan (October 17, 2026).

Can these tools see SwiftUI Previews?

Only Xcode renders previews. All three can get a snapshot through Xcode's tools when the project is open in Xcode 26.3 or later.

Build your own app in Appto

Appto checks the niche on fresh App Store data, designs the screens, writes the code, builds the App Store page and submits to Apple from your account or shows you what to press in App Store Connect. Runs on your own Claude Code or Codex.
