Xcode 26 AI. ChatGPT, Claude, agents and how to turn it all off

Three levels of AI in Xcode, from inline suggestions to agents that build the project themselves. What arrived in each version, what you need, and how an agent in Xcode differs from Claude Code in the terminal.

In short

Xcode 26 has built-in chat with ChatGPT and Claude, and you can add your own model with a key or run one on your Mac. Since Xcode 26.3 on February 3, 2026, the Claude Agent and Codex agents work inside Xcode, building the project and checking SwiftUI Previews themselves. You turn it all on, and off, in Xcode › Settings › Intelligence (Apple, October 16, 2026).

Three levels of AI in Xcode

AI in Xcode works on three levels. Inline suggestions, an assistant in chat and agents that change the project themselves.

How AI arrived in XcodeHow AI arrived in Xcode. On June 10, 2024 Apple showed Swift Assist, which never shipped under that name. On June 9, 2025 Xcode 26 was announced with ChatGPT and Claude chat and your own models. On February 3, 2026 Xcode 26.3 added the Claude Agent and Codex agents. Since April 28, 2026 the App Store only accepts builds from Xcode 26 or later. On June 25, 2026 Xcode 26.6 added Google Gemini. On September 14, 2026 Xcode 27 shipped with plan mode, plugins and an agent that works with the simulator. In 15 months Xcode went from chatting with a model to agents that build and check the app themselves. Apple Newsroom and Xcode release notes, October 16, 2026.

Swift Assist, which Apple showed on June 10, 2024, never shipped under that name. Xcode 26 brought ChatGPT and third-party models instead.

How to connect ChatGPT, Claude or your own model

Every model is set up in Xcode › Settings › Intelligence. ChatGPT works even without an account, with a limited number of requests, and signing in raises the limits (Xcode documentation, October 16, 2026).

  • ChatGPT. Turn on the ChatGPT in Xcode switch. Signing in with a free or paid account raises the limits.
  • Claude. Sign in with a paid Claude account in the browser. Xcode 26.0 offered Claude Sonnet 4, and now both Sonnet and Opus are available.
  • Another model via a key. Use Add a Chat Provider, then Internet Hosted. Any provider with Chat Completions style endpoints works, you paste the URL and the key.
  • A local model. Choose Locally Hosted and a port. For Ollama that's port 11434 (Ollama docs). A local model works offline.

The assistant opens with the Coding Assistant button or Command-0. Changes appear next to the conversation and can be rolled back through history if the project is in Git.

Agents in Xcode 26.3 and 27

On February 3, 2026 Apple announced Xcode 26.3 with the Claude Agent from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI. The agents search Apple's documentation, explore the project structure, change settings, capture Xcode Previews and rebuild until the errors are gone (Apple Newsroom). This version reached the App Store on February 26.

The Claude Agent in Xcode is built on the Claude Agent SDK, the same harness that powers Claude Code (Anthropic, February 3, 2026). We checked this on our own Mac. Xcode 27.0 downloads the agents as regular programs, Claude Code version 2.1.220 and Codex version 0.145.0, with their URLs and versions listed in the AgentVersions.plist file inside Xcode (October 17, 2026). The same folder holds 20 documentation files for the assistant, from Liquid Glass to StoreKit.

Xcode 27, released September 14, 2026, gave agents a plan mode as Markdown that you approve before any code changes, plugins with skills, Google models and the simulator. The agent launches the app, taps the screen and takes screenshots itself. Apple also added ready-made helpers for localization and accessibility (Xcode 27 release notes).

What AI can do in each Xcode versionWhat AI can do in each Xcode version. Xcode 26.0: chat with ChatGPT and Claude, your own model via a key or local; no agents. Xcode 26.3: adds the Claude Agent and Codex agents, building and fixing errors by the agent, SwiftUI Preview snapshots; no simulator work, Markdown plan or plugins. Xcode 27: all of the above plus Google models, an agent that launches the simulator and taps the screen, a Markdown plan before edits, plugins and skills. An agent in Xcode or Claude Code in the terminal

Inside Xcode the agent has easier access to previews, Apple's documentation and project settings. Claude Code in the terminal gives you more control, with its own CLAUDE.md rules file, skills, hooks and several tasks in parallel.

You can combine the two. Since Xcode 26.3 an outside agent gets Xcode's tools if you turn on Allow external agents to use Xcode tools in settings and run claude mcp add --transport stdio xcode -- xcrun mcpbridge in the terminal, or the same with codex mcp add for Codex. The project has to be open in Xcode (Apple documentation).

How to take Claude Code through a whole project, from an empty folder to the App Store, is in How to build an iOS app with Claude Code. Claude Code, Codex and Cursor on iOS work are compared in AI for iOS coding.

Why Xcode intelligence is not available

It usually comes down to the macOS version, the region or the plan.

  • An older macOS. Xcode 26.3 is the last version that installs on macOS Sequoia 15.6. Xcode 26.4 to 26.6 need macOS Tahoe 26.2, and Xcode 27 needs Tahoe 26.6 and an Apple silicon Mac (Apple's table). According to an Apple employee, agents in Xcode 26.3 and later need macOS 26.2 or later (Apple forums, March 2026).
  • Region. ChatGPT in Apple products works only where ChatGPT itself is available (Apple support). A local model doesn't depend on the region.
  • Plan. Claude in Xcode needs a paid account.
  • A managed Mac. An administrator can block external models with a device management setting.

How to turn off AI in Xcode

  1. Inline suggestions. In Xcode's editor settings, the Editing section, uncheck Predictive code completion.
  2. ChatGPT. Xcode › Settings › Intelligence, turn off ChatGPT in Xcode.
  3. Claude and other models. In the same place, sign out or remove the provider.
  4. Outside agents. Turn off Allow external agents to use Xcode tools.

After that Xcode works as before, with no calls to models. The completion model lives on your Mac and doesn't go online.

Appto works with the same agents, Claude Code and Codex, on your own subscription, and takes the app from niche to the App Store. The agent writes code in a regular Xcode project, checks Apple's documentation from your installed Xcode and walks every screen in the simulator itself.

Questions

Does Xcode have an AI agent?

Yes, since Xcode 26.3 on February 3, 2026. Claude Agent from Anthropic and Codex from OpenAI work inside it, and Xcode 27 added Google models.

Can I use Claude in Xcode?

Yes. In chat Claude connects with a paid Claude account, as an agent you get Claude Agent, and Claude Code in the terminal can use Xcode's tools through xcrun mcpbridge.

Can I use Gemini with Xcode?

Yes. Google Gemini arrived in Xcode 26.6 on June 25, 2026, and Xcode 27 has Google models and agents.

Can I run Xcode 26 on macOS Sequoia?

Yes, up to version 26.3, on macOS Sequoia 15.6 or later. Xcode 26.4 and later need macOS Tahoe 26.2, and Xcode 27 needs Tahoe 26.6.

Can I use AI in Xcode for free?

Yes. ChatGPT works without an account with limited requests, and a local model through Ollama is free. Claude needs a paid account.

Build your own app in Appto

Appto checks the niche on fresh App Store data, designs the screens, writes the code, builds the App Store page and submits to Apple from your account or shows you what to press in App Store Connect. Runs on your own Claude Code or Codex.
