Crochet and sewing is one of the youngest money shelves on the App Store. The three apps making $100K or more a month by our estimate launched between December 2024 and November 2025, and the leader, YarnPal, makes $369K–1.47M a month (not Apple data, October 16, 2026). The open angle is calculating for your own measurements instead of retelling other people's patterns.
How much crochet apps make
On October 16, 2026 YarnPal was number 40 in the US top grossing Lifestyle chart and Loopsy number 92. Sewpal, sewing patterns, was number 63 in Reference. Together the three make at least $857K a month at the low end of our estimate.

A paid Ravelry client sells too. Ravit at $6.99 was number 6 in US paid Lifestyle on Oct 15, 2026. Cozyarn, SewBuddy and Ribblr have few ratings and are not in our snapshots, so they have no range.
The whole shelf is under two years old
YarnPal launched on December 19, 2024, Loopsy on May 23, 2025 and Sewpal on November 3, 2025. In that time YarnPal reached 34,021 ratings and Sewpal 12,072 ratings in under a year. There are almost no old large subscription players around them.
The newcomers grow on the same things. They collect pattern descriptions, read them from photos and keep a row counter. The book's thesis is different. The app calculates the pattern and stitches for the person's measurements and their hook or needle size.
How to count stitches for your measurements
The calculation starts with gauge. The person crochets a swatch, measures how many stitches and rows fit in 4 inches (10 cm) and enters two numbers. Then chest, length and sleeve width turn into a starting chain, increases and decreases by row.
Yarn has a common scale. The Craft Yarn Council splits thickness into eight classes, from 0 (Lace) to 7 (Jumbo), with recommended hook and needle sizes (Standard Yarn Weight System). If the person skipped the swatch, gauge can come from the scale, marked as approximate.
Printing a pattern at full scale
Sewing patterns are printed on a home printer. iOS prints a PDF through UIPrintInteractionController, but a pattern is larger than a sheet, so it is tiled onto A4 or Letter pages with marks for taping.
Scale is checked with a test square. The first page carries a 4 by 4 inch or 10 by 10 cm square, and the person measures it with a ruler before printing the rest. "Fit to page" in the printer settings breaks the scale, so warn about it.
What goes into version 1
- Measurements and gauge. A few fields and two numbers from the swatch.
- One garment. Say a simple sweater or hat, with stitch counts by row.
- Row counter. With the current step of the calculation and large buttons for one hand.
- Printable PDF. Tiled pages and a test square.
- Your projects. Yarn, hook, photos and the row you stopped at.

Risks
- Other people's patterns. Designers' descriptions are under copyright. Calculating from your own measurements avoids the question.
- Calculation errors. A wrong increase shows after a week of work. Test the formulas on real finished pieces.
- Fast neighbors. The shelf is young and growing, and the next newcomer will come with the same idea.
