You upload 1 to 10 App Store screenshots per display size in App Store Connect, as PNG or JPEG with no transparency. As of October 16, 2026 Apple requires a screenshot for iPhone with Dynamic Island, medium display (1206×2622 or 1179×2556 pixels) and, if the app runs on iPad, one for the 13-inch iPad (2064×2752 or 2048×2732).
What screenshots are and where people see them
Screenshots are the images on your app's App Store product page. People see them in search results and on the page itself, and they use them to decide whether to tap through. Apple's guidance says up to three screenshots can show in search results, depending on orientation (Apple's App Store asset guidance, checked October 16, 2026).
Screenshots belong to a display size. You can upload a separate set for every size and every language, but App Store Connect scales large screenshots down for smaller screens on its own. If your interface looks the same on every iPhone, one iPhone set and one iPad set usually cover it.
Where to upload screenshots in App Store Connect
Screenshots go on the version page. The path is App Store Connect › Apps › your app › the iOS version › Product Page Information › the App Previews and Screenshots tab. Pick the device and drag the files into the upload well. To work on another language, switch it in the menu at the top right.
View All Sizes in Media Manager shows every size at once, along with the sizes App Store Connect will fill with scaled copies. Since October 2026 your screenshots also live in the Asset Library in the app's sidebar, and Browse Assets lets you reuse them elsewhere.

Per App Store Connect Help, checked October 16, 2026.
The required iPhone size comes with a catch. Under Required device sizes Apple lists the medium Dynamic Island display, while the notes next to each size say missing sizes are filled with scaled screenshots from a neighbouring one. Before you submit, open Media Manager and confirm the medium display actually has screenshots.
What changed in the fall of 2026
Until the fall of 2026 the spec page named iPhone sizes by diagonal, 6.9-inch, 6.5-inch, 6.3-inch and 6.1-inch. The Internet Archive copy from September 22, 2026 still uses those names, and there the 6.5-inch set was required when no 6.9-inch set was provided. In the copy from October 6, 2026 the same sizes are named by display type, with a new Required device sizes section on top. The pixels stayed the same, so older guides map onto the new names directly.
- 6.9-inch is now iPhone with Dynamic Island, large display.
- 6.5-inch is now iPhone with Face ID, large display.
- 6.3-inch is now iPhone with Dynamic Island, medium display.
- 6.1-inch is now iPhone with Face ID, medium display.
iPhone Duo, with its two displays, joined the table at the same time. On October 5, 2026 Apple announced that from April 2027 every app and game submitted will need iPhone Duo screenshots. Apps that include them get a badge on the product page saying they are optimized for iPhone Duo.
How to prepare screenshots, step by step
- Capture your screens in the simulator on an iPhone with Dynamic Island and a medium display, such as iPhone 17. Check that the file comes out at 1206×2622 or 1179×2556, the required size.
- If you want dedicated screenshots for large iPhones, capture the same screens on iPhone 17 Pro Max or iPhone Air. Any of 1320×2868, 1290×2796 or 1260×2736 works.
- If the app runs on iPad, capture the 13-inch iPad Pro simulator at 2064×2752 or 2048×2732.
- Add captions and backgrounds. Export PNG or JPEG files without an alpha channel.
- Make sure more than half of the screenshots show the app in use. Apple's notes on guideline 2.3.3 spell it out, with three screenshots at least two must show the app itself.
- Upload a set for every language, then open View All Sizes in Media Manager to see which sizes were filled with scaled copies.
Appto captures your app's screens itself, turns them into product page screenshots in every language and translates the captions. Two sets sit side by side and you pick one with a single tap, see App Store screenshots.
Common mistakes
- Transparency in a PNG. The spec page rules out alpha channels and transparency. Design tools often keep the alpha channel even on a solid background, so export the file again without it.
- Almost the right size. App Store Connect only takes the sizes in the table. A screenshot a few pixels off, or one captured with the simulator window frame, won't fit, so check the pixels before you upload.
- Only a splash screen and a login page. Under guideline 2.3.3 screenshots show the app in use. Marketing images are fine as long as they stay under half of the set.
- Old screenshots after an update. Apple suggests refreshing screenshots with every version so they match the current interface. An old design promises something people won't see after they install.
- Different Apple Watch sizes per language. For Apple Watch the screenshot size has to stay the same across all localizations, a separate rule on the spec page.
Questions
How many screenshots does the App Store need?
At least one and up to 10 per display size, per App Store Connect Help as of October 16, 2026. Search results show up to three, so make the first three the clearest.
What iPad screenshot size does the App Store need?
For the 13-inch iPad it is 2064×2752 or 2048×2732 pixels in portrait. It is required if the app runs on iPad, and App Store Connect scales it down for the other iPad sizes.
Can I upload only the largest iPhone size?
Apple's help says you only need screenshots for the highest required resolution and App Store Connect scales them down. As of October 16, 2026 the medium Dynamic Island display is the one listed as required, so check in Media Manager that it is covered.
What does 6.9-inch mean in older guides?
Until the fall of 2026 that was the name for iPhone with Dynamic Island and a large display. The sizes are unchanged, 1320×2868, 1290×2796 and 1260×2736 pixels.
What screenshot size does the Mac App Store need?
One of four 16:10 sizes, 1280×800, 1440×900, 2560×1600 or 2880×1800 pixels. Mac apps can't be submitted without them.
Build your own app in Appto
Appto checks the niche on fresh App Store data, designs the screens, writes the code, builds the App Store page and submits to Apple from your account or shows you what to press in App Store Connect. Runs on your own Claude Code or Codex.
